Juggling Workshop - June 21st

Today the River Forest Library was glad to welcome Mike Vondruska to teach us all about juggling.

First he taught us how to balance feathers on our hands, our fingers, and even our faces!

He also taught us how to juggle scarves!

Lunch on the Lawn with the OPRF Huskies

Today the River Forest Library held it's first Lunch on the Lawn and our guests today were Drew Golz and Mike Studer from the OPRF baseball team. This year the Huskies were 2nd in the state so we were excited to meet the pitcher and the catcher of the team.

Mike & Drew spent a lot of time answering everyone's questions about baseball. We found out that they are both big Chicago Cubs fans and both have great memories of attending the game.


Mike also taught us the signals that the catcher and the pitcher use when he is behind the plate.

At the end of the lunch Mike & Drew signed autographs for everyone who made it out. Thanks to everyone who came to the picnic and a big thanks to the OPRH Huskie players!

Summer Reading Kick-Off

Summer Reading has officially kicked out at the River Forest Public Library. On Monday we held a kick-off party on the lawn with a Poetry in Motion performance by Bill Buczinsky. It was a great time and thanks to everyone who came out and also everyone who has signed up for Summer Reading so far.

About a Book - Blow Out the Moon

In Blow Out the Moon, author Libby Kopponen has written a novel based on her own experiences as a young girl moving from America to London in the 1950s. Spunky young Libby struggles with the many changes, dreary weather, and her new school where students and teachers treat her cruelly. When Libby is sent to a boarding school in the English countryside, however, her luck takes a turn for the better, and the novel starts to pick up as well. Readers will enjoy tales of Libby's and her friends' adventures at school, including horse back rides and a midnight picnic feast broken up by the headmistress. Kopponen even includes pictures and memorabilia from her experiences with captions - kind of like a scrapbook.

About a Book - Bad Kitty

Bad Kitty doesn't like what her owners are feeding her. Therefore she takes revenge on them and their things. This books goes through the alphabet mulitple times with kids while also explaining Bad Kitty's way. There is also a sequel to this book called Poor Puppy as Bad Kitty takes out her bad ways on the new puppy. This short picture book is a fun time for little pet lovers!

Thank You, POCHA!

Today your library had a special visit from POCHA - Parents of Children Having Allergies. POCHA is a support group for families of children with food allergies, serving Chicago and the near west suburbs.

Today, several POCHA members and their children so generously presented us with many fabulous resources and stories special for children with allergies. Picture books and dvd's have been added to our collection - yay! Thank you, POCHA.


If you're looking for some of these new resources, please ask a library staff member. The books and dvd's will be processed and out on the shelf as soon as possible! In the meantime, here's a sneak peek to get you excited:

The Peanut-Free Cafe, by Gloria Koster

The Peanut-Free Cafe tells the story of Simon, who refuses to eat anything but 4 foods, including peanut butter. Then Grant, a new kid comes to Simon's school, and they have so much in common - they're both great at math, and they both love Dirt Bike Rodents. But, Grant is allergic to peanuts, and he is forced to sit apart from the other students at lunch who have peanut butter in their lunches.
